Flick and Swish Cocker Spaniels Tips and Tricks 3

Welcome

Hey everyone. Hope you and your fur baby are doing great. The current litter is now fully weaned and eating well. They get to play in the gardens most afternoons as long as it warms up outside by then. It is so cute watching them play with the adults. I have been trying to catch a video but by the time I get the camera going they have moved on to something else.

Today's Question

What should I do if my puppy has a stomach issue?

(This comes from what I am seeing on the Facebook feeds. 90 % of new owners are asking.)

Answer

(Disclaimer: Personal experience, this is not Medical advice always contact your Veterinarian for health concerns as they know your pet and their personal history. )

Now, that is out of the way.

As a Veterinarian Technician,

This is what we were told at the Vet Clinics to tell clients. Cocker Spaniels have notoriously sensitive stomachs. So you withhold food 12 hours and give the stomach a chance to catch up. Then, feed a small amount if after a hour the puppy is feeling better. Go ahead and feed them the normal amount. If they are not feeling better call your Veterinarian back.

As a Breeder,

It is probably from changing the food the puppy was sent home on to quickly to something else. Make sure you follow the 1/4 rule. If you are unfamiliar with the 1/4 rule. It goes you feed a quarter of the new food and three quarters the food they were sent home on. Then you increase the amount of the new food 1/4  every 2 to 3 days while decreasing the old food the same 1/4 amount until it is all new food. We recommend doing the same thing with water and send our puppies home on bottled water to avoid travelers diarrhea. The puppies can get it the same as we can.

As a Puppy Mom,

Yes, I am a New Puppy Mom too.  I am keeping a beautiful little girl from Swish's Domino and Sadie litter. Her name is Ella, formerly Heart's Desire. Fyi, I do not get to bring her home to stay until Gotcha Day either. Anyways, she will not end up having any stomach issues at all. The reason is simple, it is all stress. The only difference we can pinpoint is that she knows me. I helped birth her and have snuggled her everyday of her life. She doesn't know all of my dogs yet, just Swish's but is used to being part of a pack. I won't be changing her food or water. If I did it wouldn't be for 2 or more weeks.

Finally,

So what should you take from my long winded convulted answer. Don't panic and don't worry, it is not something you did. There is probably nothing truely wrong with your puppy. Unless you have been holding your puppy everyday for 8 weeks. Your puppy will probably have stomach issues at least a little the first day or two from stress alone. But if it lasts more than 12 to 24 hours then you should be on the phone to the Vet. Hope this helps ease your mind.

Today's Trick

The ever important "stand".

With your puppy in the sit position. (If you need a refersher on sit it was in the second blog I posted.) Take a training treat put it in front of the puppies nose, say "Stand" and pull it slowly away in a straight line. Your puppy will then stand up almost like you pulled on a string. Say " Good, Stand" give the treat. Have the puppy then sit again and start over. Practice this trick everday with sit for a well trained puppy.
