Flick and Swish Cocker Spaniels

Tips and Tricks 2

WELCOME BACK

Hope your puppy journey is going well. Things have been very busy here at Flick and Swish with our current litter. This litter's Gotcha Day is November 6, 2024, we have a couple of puppies still not spoken for.

Speaking of this litter we are working on sit this week so I thought it might be a good time to go over this basic obedience training.

Also, I have a question that was asked by a friend. Her new puppy is crying at night. (Just to be clear, this is not a Cocker Spaniel. She also got her puppy earlier than I would have let it go home at 6 weeks. Anyway, I'm not judging her breeder just explaining this why we wait to let them go at 8 weeks when they are more able to sleep without their Mommy.)

QUESTION

My brand new puppy is crying all night and I just got her what do I do?

ANSWER

If your breeder sent home a blankie or toy with mom and the litters scent on it this will soothe your puppy. You wrap the puppy up in the blankie or snuggle it with the toy. Sit, hold, and rock the puppy just like a baby. Until she goes to sleep then carefully lay her in her crate. Products like snuggle puppy or similar products do work just follow the directions. But if it is the middle of the night and the store is closed, rocking will work. Just have patience and remember it is probably the first time that 6 week old has ever been away from mom and her littermates. It make take a week or so before she gets used to the situation. Added tip, In a pinch, have used a warm towel in the microwave for a couple seconds and a ticking watch to soothe a really upset puppy. A word of caution, do not put your puppy in your bed and go to sleep. They are to small and fragile for that to be safe. Two things are most likely to happen, the puppy will fall off or get accidentally knocked off the bed. As a Veterinary Technician, I have seen so many puppies treated for hurt legs after that happening. The second thing that could happen someone rolls over on the puppy and squashes or kills it. Just do not put the puppy on the bed and sleep with it until its lots bigger.

Training Tip

Sit

So the first thing most puppies learn is sit. You take your treat walk close in front of the puppy. Show the puppy the treat and say sit. Hold the treat in front of the puppy's nose. Raise the treat from the nose to the top of the puppy's forehead repeating the word sit. Most all puppy's will immediately sit. Because they are trying to follow where that treat is going. When the puppy sits give the treat. Wait until the puppy stands up and repeat 15 minutes a day. Until you no longer need to lead the puppy with the treat.
